It’s likely only a matter of time before Fox rolls out a press release announcing that “Empire” has already been greenlit for a season three.
According to Deadline, the season two premiere of the musical drama attracted 16.2 million viewers, which is a massive 76% increase from its January 2014 series premiere. Wednesday’s episode also scored a 6.7 rating with adults in the 18-49 demographic.
The Lee Daniels-led program went on to make Twitter history this week when it generated a whopping 1.3 million tweets, making it the number one most tweeted one-hour broadcast drama series ever.
Following the success of the premiere, Daniels took to Twitter Thursday to celebrate and thank fans for their support.
Empire’s debut season run was 12 episodes, but with the success of the series in mind, Fox executives decided to stretch season two into 18 episodes, the New York Times reports. Considering how explosive episode one was, we can only imagine what will unfold in the remaining 17 episodes.
