Monthly bleeding on the pill is caused by withdrawal bleeding due to the placebo pills in the pack, not by your actual period (the pill stops ovulation and your period in their tracks).
And this false cycle is unnecessary. The original makers of the pill simply thought that adding a time for menstrual bleeding would make women feel more comfortable with this form of birth control when it was new on the market.
