A top legal aide for New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has been declared brain dead, AM NY reports.
Carey Gabay, 43, was hit by a stray bullet as he stood on a Brooklyn street on the eve of the borough’s beloved West Indian Day parade.
“We are saddened to announce that after an arduous week, Carey Gabay, our husband, son, brother, uncle and friend, has been declared brain dead as of late Tuesday,” Gabay’s family said in a statement Tuesday. “There are difficult decisions we will face in the coming hours and days as our family struggles to process what this means for us.”
The family has also asked that their privacy be respected.
“Carey has been fighting bravely surrounded by the loved ones to whom he has brought so much joy with his jovial nature, generosity of spirit and enduring smile,” the family spokesperson continued. “This is a nightmare that’s shaken our resolve and tested our faith.”
Governor Cuomo also shared words regarding the Harvard graduate’s unfortunate health update.
“Today we are all incredibly saddened by the news from Carey Gabay’s family. I ask that all New Yorkers, please join me in keeping both Carey and his family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” read a post shared to the politician’s Facebook page.
According to Newsday, more than 300 videos from the shooting have been retrieved by police. Law enforcement sources say that facial recognition software is being used to track down the gunmen.
We send our prayers to Gabay’s wife, Trenelle Gabay, and the Gabay family.
