“Straight Outta Compton” Producer Pitching Sequel, “Welcome To Death Row”
Straight Outta Compton has officially made history as the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, and apparently, producers are trying to cash in while the getting is good. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Compton executive producer S. Leigh Savidge is already shopping around a sequel to the N.W.A. biopic, which maintained the number one spot at the box office for three consecutive weeks.
The project is titled Welcome to Death Row and is said to be based on Savidge’s 2001 documentary-turned-book by the same name. The documentary chronicles the rise and fall of Death Row Records during the ‘90s and features many of the same personalities from Compton, including Suge Knight, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg.
Currently, Savidge does not have the rights to music associated with Death Row Records; however, he was able to license N.W.A’s music for Compton after negotiating with Eazy-E’s widow, Tomica Woods-Wright, and reportedly, hopes to do the same with Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur.
It is unclear if any of the actors from Compton will be cast in the sequel.
