“Being Mary Jane” Returns Next Month, Jill Scott & Loretta Devine Cast [Watch]

“Being Mary Jane” returns to BET next month, and it looks like we’re in for quite the emotional ride. According to Entertainment Weekly, Loretta Devine and Jill Scott have been cast in the new season.

When season two concluded, Mary Jane got into a horrific car accident after learning that her friend, Lisa, has been carrying on a sexual relationship with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, David. Devine will be playing the role of Cecilia, a bookstore owner whose vehicle Mary Jane hit. Cecilia will attempt to extort the news anchor for $25,000 in the wake of the accident; however, the women will eventually form an unexpected bond when Cecilia “offers MJ unwanted, but invaluable, pieces of advice and wisdom,” says BET. Scott has been cast as Niecy’s mother, who is “back in town just long enough to show her [daughter] some tough love and Patrick some much-needed sexual attention.”

Of course, there’s always drama brewing at SNC. Mary Jane will find herself “sidelined at work when a beautiful young Latina anchor, Marisol, shines as her replacement while she is out on medical leave.” Thankfully, the TV vet will find a way to save her job and will later decide to embark on a “life cleanse” that causes her to bring her career path and personal life choices into question. A family tragedy will also arise that “will throw her world into chaos once more.”

“Season 3 is about new beginnings, putting lessons learned to the test, and of course healing,” says BMJ creator and showrunner Mara Brock Akil. “After receiving that phone call from David and getting into a car accident, Mary Jane has no other options but to work on her recovery from the accident, from toxic relationships, and from her self-destructive ways. It’s a season that will remind fans why they fell in love with Mary Jane to begin with. She’s flawed and somewhat broken, but watching her piece her life together is beautiful.”

“Being Mary Jane” premieres Tuesday, October 20 at 9 p.m. ET on BET. Check out a sneak peek from the new season below.
