Messy Movies: Films That Broke Up Celebrity Marriages
Who says all of that on-screen chemistry is just acting? The romance in these Hollywood movies was very real, so real that it broke up these celebrity marriages.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Mr. & Mrs. Smith may be a great movie, but it will never be as famous for its storyline as it is for breaking up Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s marriage.
Years before Angelina Jolie played opposite Brad Pitt in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, she starred in another movie: Pushing Tin. This time her co-star was Billy Bob Thornton, who was engaged to actress Laura Dern at the time. Soon after Thornton announced his split with Dern, Jolie was spotted sporting a “Billy Bob” tattoo on her arm. They were married in 2000 and divorced three years later.
Snow White and the Huntsman
Snow White and the Huntsman star Kristen Stewart and director Rupert Sanders met on set and had a secret affair — until the tabloids published pictures of them kissing.
Stewart (who was dating Robert Pattinson at the time) took most of the public heat over the affair, but it cost Sanders his marriage.
Everyone remembers Gigli as the movie that brought Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez together, but few people remember that Jennifer Lopez was married to her second husband, Cris Judd, at the time.
Mind Over Murder
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott had an affair while filming this 2005 Lifetime movie. And although their respective spouses weren’t too happy, these two managed to live (mostly) happily ever after despite Dean stepping out on Spelling last year.
Proof of Life
Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid seemed like they were going to be together forever — until Ryan met Russell Crowe on the set of the 2000 film Proof of Life.
Soon after Ryan and Crowe’s affair went public, the actress and Quaid announced the end of their 10-year marriage. But this new relationship didn’t last long. Ryan and Crowe broke up just a few months later.
Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon seemed like the perfect couple. So fans were very surprised when rumors began circulating that Phillippe had cheated on Witherspoon with his Stop-Loss co-star Abbie Cornish. Neither Witherspoon nor Phillippe has spoken about the rumors, but the two announced their split a few months after rumors of the affair hit the tabloids. Soon after, Cornish and Phillippe made their debut as a couple.
Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz were both engaged to other people when they starred in this film. And although they deny cheating while filming this psychological thriller, they both split from their partners and started dating before the movie made it to DVD.
Claire Danes and Billy Crudup found themselves in the headlines when they hooked up on the set of Stage Beauty. Despite the fact that Billy Crudup was dating Mary-Louise Parker, who was pregnant with his child, he left her to be with Danes. The new couple’s relationship lasted for four years before they finally split.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet may have had Titanic‘s on-screen love affair, but a real romance was going on behind the scenes. It wasn’t until nearly a decade later that James Cameron’s ex-wife Linda Hamilton revealed that she divorced Cameron because of his on-set affair with Titanic actress Suzy Amis.
When director Robert Rodriguez’s wife found out about the private lunches he was having in actress Rose McGowan’s trailer while filming Planet Terror, she packed up their five children and left. Rodriguez and McGowan went public with their relationship in 2007, even getting engaged. But they officially ended things in 2009.
Things must have gotten really steamy on the set of the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons. All that steam led to Michelle Pfeiffer and John Malkovich having a brief affair, despite the fact that Malkovich was married to actress Glenne Headley. The couple divorced that same year, and Malkovich and Pfeiffer began a relationship that didn’t last long.
This was the 2009 TV movie that created the LeAnn Rimes-Eddie Cibrian cheating scandal that still finds its way into the headlines from time to time.
When LeAnn Rimes finally addressed the affair that ended her marriage and Eddie Cibrian’s respective union, she said, “I take responsibility for everything I’ve done. I hate that people got hurt. But I don’t regret the outcome.”
And with that kind of apology, it’s no wonder why Rimes and Cibrian’s ex-wife, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills‘ Brandi Glanville, remain mortal enemies.
Cleopatra is the movie that started an affair so epic that Lindsay Lohan starred in a Lifetime movie about it nearly 50 years later. Even though its stars — Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton — were already married, they fell in love on set. The resulting affair was so scandalous that not only did it end their respective marriages, even the Vatican condemned it, calling it an “erotic vagrancy.”
