Earlier this month, the New York Daily News dubbed Jordin Sparks “the next Mariah.” Of course, considering all that Mimi has accomplished during her 25+ years in the industry, Sparks has some pretty large shoes to fill. And naturally, some are wondering if she truly lives up to the massive title that Daily News writer Jim Farber has afforded her.
In a recent interview, the “Right Here, Right Now” singer spoke briefly about the comparisons, and she’s pretty flattered.
“That’s the biggest compliment ever. Ever,” she told Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club”.
According to Sparks, Carey has been a part of her musical journey before she was even born.
“My mom was listening to Mariah when she was pregnant with me, and so I feel like she’s been a part of my life my entire life. There’s a lot of her influence in the way I sing and what I really like to hear. So for somebody to say that is a real big compliment to me.”
The 25-year-old also discussed her new boyfriend, Sage the Gemini, and the fact that he’s already referring to her as his “wife.”
“He is manifesting, which I think is sweet. We are enjoying each other; I’m not in a rush. I think it’s a great thing. I don’t just date people if I don’t see it going anywhere, so if in a couple of years that happens, that will be great.”
And of course, Charlamagne and the crew wouldn’t allow her to discuss Sage without addressing the drama that went down a few months ago when a woman claiming to be his ex-fiancée, Curium Hurley, alleged that he cheated on her with Sparks. Hurley went on to allege that Sage was still trying to reconcile with her even after he went public with his relationship with Sparks. Screenshots of direct messages supposedly sent to Sparks from Hurley were circulating on Instagram, but according the singer, she was never contacted by the woman, who she says is an attention seeker.
“My thing is, usually when stuff like that happens in any kind of context, usually that person is trying to get the attention, and for me I’m like why talk about it? That’s just giving them the attention they want. Whatever, that was a couple months ago…she tried it.”
