“I’m Too Grown To Be Lying” Matt Barnes Sticks To His I “Dated” Rihanna Story

August 20, 2015  |

Despite being publicly clowned by an international pop star and subsequently roasted by the rest of the blogosphere, Matt Barnes is sticking to the story that he and Rihanna were dating…or talking…or seeing where their relationship would go.

You may remember that he told TMZ that his friendship with Rihanna had moved past the crush stage.

Rihanna, the Clapback Queen, heard about Barnes’ claims and responded on her own Instagram page.

We all scratched our head at Barnes’ desert thirst and chuckled at his expense.

We would have moved on to the next story, had it not continued to pop up on our newsfeed. First, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, who played, most famously, for the Boston Celtics, said that Matt Barnes was a stand up guy and wouldn’t lie about dating Rihanna. He was adamant about it.

Then he seemed to suggest that they text each other.

I don’t know about Matt Barnes being all that good of a guy. The disrespect he showed to James Harden’s mother, telling her to suck his dick and the way he’s publicly disrespected his wife and mother of his children seem to suggest otherwise.

Now, Barnes is stepping forward with his own defense.

In a recent interview on The Jim Rome Show,  he stuck to his story.

“You live and you learn. When you’re in a situation like this and, you know, you just learn. You just got to keep stuff to yourself obviously,” Barnes said. “But the way I’m putting it right now, I’m too grown to lie, you know what I mean. It is what it is, I’m going to let this blow by like everything else blows by.”

When asked how he responded to Rihanna’s hashtag scolding, he said:

“I just smiled. I just smiled, that’s it,” Barnes said. “What can you do? At the end of the day we’re all grown-ups. Like I said I’m too grown to be lying about stuff but life is life. You live and you learn.”

Then Matt explained why he he’s not about that lying life.

“In life in general, there’s no need. I’m grown,” Barnes said. “My upbringing just doesn’t allow me to have that kind of stuff in it. Life, sports whatever it is I’m just about the truth. I’m always going to be me, even if you know sometimes my mouth gets me in trouble. I’m always going to be me, because I speak on things I feel passionately about. So love me or hate me I’m going to be me regardless.”

Matt’s a funny dude.

Either way, until he can come up off some receipts to corroborate his story, I’m choosing to believe Rihanna.
