New Edition Biographical Miniseries Headed To BET

August 10, 2015  |

New Edition is the latest group to get the biopic treatment.

According to Variety, five of the group’s members will reunite, on BET, for the three-night miniseries, which is set to premiere in 2016. Five group members, including Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant, will co-produce the project.

BET released a statement announcing the project but sixth member Bobby Brown was not mentioned.

The group, founded initially in 1978, has broken up and reunited on several different occasions, most recently for a tour that Brown had to leave early due to health issues, both his own and eventually Bobbi Kristina’s.

Jesse Collins Entertainment is set to executive produce the miniseries. It will mark the first scripted music-focused TV movie for the network.

New Edition’s longtime manager Brooke Payne will also co-produce. Abdul Williams, who wrote for Lottery Ticket, will write the script. A director has yet to be selected.

New Edition had this to say about the project:

“From our beginning in the Orchard Park Projects in Boston to Hollywood and everything in between, just like The Temptations and the Jackson 5, we are ready to retrace our footsteps and show everyone how we got here.”

We think this has the potential to be pretty great. Perhaps it’ll even open the door for BET to take on more projects like this.
