“The Wiz Live!” Star Shanice Williams Dishes On Snatching Up The Life-Changing Role
Last week, we were happy to report that NBC introduced a fresh face for the leading role in TV production, The Wiz Live! 19-year-old Shanice Williams, who snagged the role of Dorothy, recently opened up about acquiring the life-changing role and her aspirations for the future.
According to the teen, she decided to audition for the production so that she wouldn’t be sitting at home on the couch during her entire summer vacation.
“I was at school and I was like ‘OK I’m coming home for the summer, and I need to have something to do because my mom’s not gonna let me sit on the couch,’” she told The Source. “I looked up auditions, and this came up and I was like ‘this is huge, super huge,’ so I’m not gonna go into this like ‘please I want the part.’ I’ve never had any New York audition experience, and I wanted learn the process and that’s how it started.”
The student, who was offered the role two weeks before NBC made the big casting announcement, said that it was difficult to keep the news a secret while waiting for the network to make the big reveal.
“I felt like it was harder than the audition,” Williams confessed. “It was so hard just because everyone knew I was in the audition process, and they were asking me everyday like, ‘what now?! what now?!’”
As for her plans after appearing in the live NBC production, Williams had this to say:
“I like film and I like Broadway; I just love performing, so whatever God has for me I’ll be happy to just try it and see what happens because no matter what, if I’m performing I’ll be happy.”
The Wiz Live! is slated to air on Thursday, December 3.
