The story that seemed to dominate the news cycle this week was the death of Cecil the Lion. For those who missed it, Cecil, an African lion in Zimbabwe who had been studied for years at the Hwange National Park. But his life was cut short when an American dentist paid $50,000 to hunt and kill him. It was a true tragedy. But not more tragic than the dozens of Black lives that have been taken at the hands of police.
Yet, Cecil has drummed up insane amounts of support. Jimmy Kimmel raised over $150k in a day for lion research, he was all over the news and social media and the United Nations is stepping in to investigate. And when we call for media attention and justice, highlighting the universal truth that Black lives matter, people seek to diminish it. They bring up Black on Black crime, they make character attacks, demean our protests and try to detract by saying all lives matter.
In a satirical trending topic, Black Twitter explained just how foolish these arguments and rationalizations really are. Check them out on the following pages.
