For The Makeup Lover In You: Urban Decay’s 3 Best Products For Women Of Color

July 29, 2015  |

The makeup world can be a mystery to some and an obsession to others. Quite often, women of color struggle to find the right products that mesh well with our diversely beautiful and melanin-rich skin tones. Well, the struggle is over. I will be exploring several mainstream cosmetic lines to find products that work best for women of color, application tips, and the latest makeup trends in general. Whether you are a makeup all day everyday kind of girl or if you only wear makeup on special occasions, there is something out there just for you.

The first company in this series is Urban Decay. Urban Decay is like the Andy Warhol of makeup lines. Known for their bold color palettes, the company has produced high-performing, show-stopping products for more than 15 years. But many women of color tend to shy away from bold colors for fear that such looks won’t compliment their darker hues. However, Tammy Bartel, Urban Decay’s Public Relations Manager, was eager to dispel such a myth. She gave us the real deal on some of the company’s most beloved products, but specifically, the ones that stand out for women of color.

Here are three popular products you should try:

Electric Pressed Pigment Palette $49

The packaging on this eye shadow palette is a work of art all by itself. It comes complete with 10 vibrant matte and metallic color options. Though the pigments look chalky when applied to the eyelids, they are smooth and the color really pops. A shadow brush is included. However, the Vegan “Good Karma” Blending Brush is recommended for a more professional look.

How To Apply: Choose a color. Or two. Or three! Don’t be afraid to take a risk. Start with a neutral color as your base to accentuate the crease in your eyelids. Then, choose one of the brighter colors like Thrash and Revolt (see below) for the inner part of your lid and eye duct. Add a darker color like Urban and Fringe for the outer portion of your eyelid. The key to successfully applying multicolored eye shadow to the eye without looking clownish is blending. Blending is your best friend. All of the pigments in this palette mix well together. Use the “Good Karma” Blending Brush to lightly fuse the colors together. Again, blending is your best friend!

Special Tip: Add Thrash to your ducts, Freak to the middle of your lids and Fringe to the outer edge of your lids. Blend! Blend! Blend! Add Urban Decay’s 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner and Perversion Mascara to complete the look.

Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup $39

There’s absolutely no gimmicks here; the name of the product speaks truth to its performance. Naked Skin is a liquid foundation. Unlike many foundations that are thick and sometimes feel sticky, Naked Skin glides on lightly, and you won’t even know you have makeup on at all. It dries evenly, no streaks, and gives you a smooth full coverage finish. It works well on all skin types. It is oil and paraben-free and is also made with Litchiderm, which protects the skin from dehydration and aging. Naked Skin comes in a wide range of shades that fit our complexions. Urban Decay provides a numbered shade finder that you can use to choose the hue that fits you. Shades ending in “.0” are warm with a yellow/olive undertone. Shades ending in “.5” are cool with rosy/neutral undertones.

How To Apply: The best way to apply Naked Skin is with the vegan “Good Karma” Multi-tasker Brush. After you have finished all of the regimens you do prior to makeup application, including cleansing and moisturizing, and even after you add definition to your brows and use the Electric Pressed Pigment Palette for your eyelids, add foundation and concealer to complete your look. Use a small amount of Naked Skin to lightly coat your “Good Karma” Multi-tasker Brush and gently glide the coated brush on the skin. You can apply the foundation to your entire face and neck or only to areas you’d like to cover. Trust me, your look will be flawless.

Special Tip: Squirt no more than a penny-sized amount on the back side of your hand and use your hand to hold the foundation as you coat your brush and apply it to the skin.

Revolution Lipstick $22

Revolution Lipstick is a creamy lipstick that has more than 20 shades to choose from. From classic nudes to bright reds, Revolution has a smooth formula that adds moisture to the lips. Some of the ingredients in Revolution include jojoba oil, avocado oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter, which lock the moisture in and keep the lips soft and ready to pucker up.

How To Apply: Application is very easy. Twist the lipstick case to extend the lipstick and glide it on your lips. Rub lips together and blot if necessary.

Special Tip: This fall, consider wearing a deep purple like the shade Speedball.
