New York representative, Anthony Weiner announced that he’s resigning today. The Democrat served more than 12 years as a Congressman. The announcement comes after nearly three weeks of pressure for Democratic colleagues suggesting he step down. President Obama even weighed in on the situation, saying he would resign if he were in Weiner’s shoes.
This is what Weiner said at the press conference in Brooklyn: “Today I am announcing my resignation from Congress so my colleagues can get back to work, my neighbors can choose a new representative and most importantly that my wife and I can continue to heal from the damage I have caused.”
Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary Hillary Clinton, is expecting the couple’s first child.
The scandal began last month when Weiner accidentally tweeted a picture of himself in gray boxers. Initially Wiener denied it was him in the photo. Once he admitted it was him. other sexually suggestive pictures he’d sent through his cell phone surfaced.
The story only got messier yesterday when former Adult Videos star and current stripper, Ginger Lee, claimed that Weiner wanted to engage in sexual communication but she never went through with it.
