For mother’s, breastfeeding and nurturing their newborns is a totally natural and beautiful experience. But breastfeeding has become a very hot topic and controversial issue especially when it comes to a mother who wants to breastfeed in public. So it comes as no surprise that the new June cover issue of Australian Elle magazine has some people up in arms.

Elle Australia had supermodel Nicole Trunfio pose for their June cover breastfeeding her newborn.

The Australian model gave birth to Zion in January and she took to Instagram to talk about why she chose to do that type of cover. She expressed that she hoped it will change the way people feel about breastfeeding.

She posted:

“There is nothing more powerful and beautiful than motherhood. The last thing I want to do is be controversial, so please take this for what it is, let us #normalizebreastfeeding there is nothing worse than a mother that is judged for feeding her hungry child in public. #weareonlyhuman I’m so proud of this cover and for what it’s stands for. I obviously don’t look like this while I am breastfeeding but this stands for all women out there, whether you breastfeed or not, we gave birth, we are women, we are mothers. Thank you to ELLE for being so bold and making such an encouraging, positive and healthy statement. #womenunite.”

The editor-in-chief also explained that it wasn’t a planned cover decision and that it happened naturally.

“This wasn’t a contrived situation: Zion needed a feed, Nicole gave it to him, and when we saw how beautiful they looked we simply moved her onto the set…It was a completely natural moment that resulted in a powerful picture,” said editor-in-chief Justine Cullen.

The June issue of Elle Australia hits newsstands Monday.
