NFL Player Devon Still Gives Encouraging Update About Daughter’s Battle With Cancer

March 18, 2015  |

Whether you’re a fan of football or just enjoy heart-warming endings, this is good news that can provide much needed hope for parents with children battling cancer.

In the midst of NFL scandals last year, Cincinnati Bengals player Devon Still and his four-year-old daughter Leah continued to make headlines.  The defensive tackle announced Leah’s battle with stage four neuroblastoma on social media last summer, and her fight for remission. Soon after, he was released from his team but thankfully re-signed to the practice squad in efforts to give him much needed financial support. Over the course of the season, fans and those with a good heart purchased Still’s jersey to help raise money for cancer research. The Cincinnati Bengals also donated $1 million in his honor to a local hospital.

Receiving bad news after bad news, Still remained hopeful. “I understand that blessings don’t happen when I want them to, they happen when they’re suppose to,” Devon wrote on Instagram earlier this year. “So we are going to keep faith and keep fighting no matter what.”

It looks like his prayers have been answered.

“We got Leah’s MIBG Scans back tonight and the doctors told us they didn’t see any active disease in her body!” Still reports. With the results of Leah’s MRI and bone biopsy still pending, doctors appear to be hopeful. Leah’s journey has inspired the hashtag #LeahStrong that not only provides updates about her battle, but also sheds light on cancer.

As parents, all we want for our children is for them to be healthy and safe. It’s always heart-breaking to hear stories about little ones who battle diseases—or have to experience pain we’re unable to take away. Too many of our social media timelines are full of news that makes you question the goodness in humanity and if there really is light at the end of the tunnel.

Leah’s battle and her father’s unwavering faith are much-needed reminders to not only count your blessings, but never lose sight that things have a way of turning out okay—even if the outcome looks bleak.
