Yesterday, T.I. announced via Instagram that not only will there be a sequel to 2006’s coming of age film ATL; but they have already started filming it. The original nucleus has all returned in which one picture shows Tip and Lauren London and another with director Chris Robinson alongside the core four fellas. We are partly looking forward to this because the first movie was released during those carefree college years.
The other part is incredibly wary. Sequels are either great or terrible. Even if they’re terrible we still like some of them. The thing about many black movies is that they stand well on their own. We fall in love with the characters and would love to see what happens next when we already know what will. They were made to be one-and-done films because Hollywood doesn’t do big budget films with black actors. When they do happen, it often feels like someone poured milk onto filet mignon and it taints the legacy of something that was loved.
With news of ATL2 being created (and hopefully being as good or better than the original), this week’s Throwback Thursday is dedicated to the sequels we loved, love to hate, and hated.
