Nicki wants to be a mom soon!
Well, that’s if you consider under five years soon. As Nicki Minaj continues to make the rounds to promote the release of her third album, The Pinkprint, the 32-year old artist has been opening up about her personal life more than ever. Addressing everything from her breakup with Safaree “SB” Samuels to her career plans, Nicki admitted in an interview with Power 105’s Angie Martinez that she was ready to settle down, get married, and then—have a baby in the next five years!
This isn’t the first time Nicki has spoken about this. Back in 2013, the rapper told Marie Claire magazine that she had the desire to be a mother. “I want to be a mom one day, and I want to start becoming the woman who I want to parent my child,” she said in her interview.
So who will be the lucky man that wifes Nicki Minaj? The jury is still out. But there will definitely be a husband before there is a baby, Nicki insists. She says she’s going to be able to plan things, and that she’s getting married first and then having a baby, in that order.
“Of course, of course, I’ll have that,” Nicki responds to Angie’s question about whether she’ll ever have a baby. And when Ang asks about the time frame, Nicki responds, “Not that far away as five years. I definitely want to have a baby in under five years… I’ll probably be a mother by my fifth album.”
So if Nicki is planning to have a family by then, is she already considering her options? It’s hard to say. During the interview, she kinda admitted to being in another relationship. “I don’t really know if I’m single now either.”
Though she wouldn’t give up too many details about the new guy, she was more comfortable than ever talking about her last one. Though Nicki did a good job of keeping her past relationship out of the public eye, industry insiders know that she and her ex Safaree were together for fourteen years. Nicki has credited SB for having a heavy influence on her career. But she also admits that if she had not pursued her career, she’d be a mother by now. “If I wasn’t a rapper, we would have children, be married and be living happily ever after,” she said. Referencing the time they were together, she acknowledged “People are married and have three children in that time.”
Nicki got emotional and started to tear up while talking about the love of her life. “My relationship was based of love, and there still is nothing but love there,” she said. “This is not some person I picked up off the street. This is somebody I grew up with. Like, I don’t even know how I’m gonna function without that person in my life,” she said. “I’ve never lived my life as a famous person without him.”
She acknowledges that the breakup would have been harder with children. “Thank God we got out now before there were children involved.”
When asked whether she was currently dating, Nicki admitted that she went from one relationship to another. Though she would not fess up and name names, Angie addressed her about rumored relationship with Meek Mill. Nicki said they were just friends.
“Meek can’t be the baby daddy, though,” jokes Martinez, to which Nicki yells in surprise. But Nicki quickly jumps to Meek’s defense. “Why he can’t be the baby daddy?” she responds, still jokingly, but almost with a hint of seriousness to her question.
“He’s going to be too high maintenance,” Angie begins. “I mean, Nick, you’re not going to be able to control or tame somebody like Meek Mill.” Meek’s own baby momma drama hit the internet after he dropped his debut album and the relationship fell apart. There were even reports of child support issues between the two.
After all the crosstalk and joking about Nicki’s potential baby daddy, she made sure she put her disclaimer out. “We’re talking hypothetically. Meek is just my friend. He’s a great candidate for the [next] tour.”
