Watch: Inspiring Shonda Rhimes Speech on Breaking Glass Ceiling

March 29, 2015  |

Shonda Rhimes is having an incredible run and does not plan on slowing down anytime soon, with two major television shows and making ABC the place to be on a Thursday night. All of her amazing talent is, of course, not going unnoticed. The Hollywood Reporter honored Rhimes with the Sherry Lansing Award for Leadership, in December at their 23rd Annual Women in Entertainment Breakfast. We’re taking a look back at her speech as we get ready to head into the second quarter of 2015, with her wisdom and inspiration.

The award Rhimes received has also been given to heavyweights Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Walters, and Meryl Streep to name a few. When Rhimes first received the call notifying her of the award she wondered why… not because she doesn’t recognize her own powerhouse talent, but still she wondered.

The Hollywood Reporter responded in a statement saying Rhimes was receiving the coveted award for being an African American woman who is breaking through the industry’s glass ceiling. What comes next in Shonda Rhime’s acceptance speech is beyond inspiring.

From recognizing her Beyonce “I woke up like this” flare to realizing she is following in the footsteps of other women who were able to have a crack at the proverbial glass ceiling before she ever arrived – Rhimes goes in. She also makes no mistake in mentioning she received the honor because of the  glass ceiling “that exists in the face of being a woman and being black in this very male, very white town.”

“Making it through the glass ceiling to the other side was simply a matter of running on a path created by every other woman’s footprints. I just hit at exactly the right time in exactly the right spot,” said Rhimes.

Watch the full speech below and prepare to be inspired.
