It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for the new “Annie” movie to come out, but (finally) we’re only about a month away from the big screen debut. The latest tidbit we’re getting from the flick starring “Beasts of the Southern Wild” actress Quvenzhané Wallis as the orphan girl with a heart of gold, is a clip of her singing.
When Will Gluck signed on to direct “Annie,” he knew he wanted to update the music, so he snagged songwriters Sia and Greg Kurstin to give the classic musical a modern-day feel.
While the “Chandelier” singer, Sia, (who also wrote “Diamonds” for Rihanna) was initially only supposed to write a song or two for the film, Gluck eventually convinced her to come onboard for the whole thing.
Sia and Kurstin wrote three entirely new songs for the movie, according to People.com.
And Gluck says his favorite is “Opportunity,” which Annie sings after she realizes that she’s got a good thing going with Jamie Foxx’s character (Daddy Warbucks),” he tells People.com. “She goes to the Guggenheim Museum and they ask her to give a speech, but instead she just sings a song about what a great opportunity she’s been given.”
“Yes, that’s me really singing,” Wallis said in the Essence magazine cover story. “It’s sort of like she’s tailor-made for the role in a sense,” Foxx said. “I would challenge you to find a girl who personifies Annie better than Quvenzhané.”
“Annie,” produced by Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith, is out Dec. 19.
