Halloween Costume Inspiration: Comic Con Kids
In the not-too-distant past, adults dressing up for comic book conventions was nothing more than joke fodder for those sitting at society’s cool kids table. Now with the mainstreaming of nerd culture, donning costumes (or cosplaying) is what the cool kids are doing. It’s nothing to see people who haven’t been scarred by youthful awkwardness show up to comic conventions dressed to celebrate the fictional characters they love on the down low. Credit Hollywood celebrities like Ashton Kutcher, the success of “The Big Bang Theory” TV show and the rockstar transformation of Apple Computer’s late CEO Steve Jobs for making nerds synonymous with awesome.
Surely, it wouldn’t take long for the same community that grew up in the shadows of nerdom to boastfully show off their offspring at the conventions they make yearly pilgramages to. Even though it’s way cuter to see a child dressed up as a superhero, parents have been incredibly creative with the outfits put on their kiddies.
Out of the 100,000 plus attendees of New York Comic Con 2014, there were hundreds of kids dressed up as characters from sci-fi films, Disney movies and more. Some parents created costumes of Rocket Racoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy movie with perfectly scaled weapons. Babies cosplayed as Adventure Time characters and there was even an kid done up as the obscure “Propeller Suit Mario” video game character. The outfit caught the camera flashes of passersbys with its fully-functioning propeller helmet.
Some costumes which are more risque in the adult versions were adorably modified for little ones like Harley Quinn from the Batman universe. There was also a mini Supergirl who’s costume was designed to draw “awwws” instead of “oooohs” from its grown-up counterpart.
Then you have the costumes like Astrid from the How to Train Your Dragon 2 film and Donatello from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that look like something that would be impossible to find in a department store. The series of slides after the click will show-off the irresistible cuteness of New York Comic Con’s kids in their nerdy glory.
