#GoMommy: Clean Comedy At Caroline’s For #NYTough
Actor and New York native Marlon Wayans, along with fellow comedians Sherri Shepherd, Michael Che and Michelle Buteau joined brands Bounty, Crest, Dawn, Febreeze, Head & Shoulders and Tide to host the #NYTough Comedy Showcase at Caroline’s On Broadway Tuesday night. The fun showcase celebrated what every New Yorker knows – while little everyday struggles in the city add up, true New Yorkers are tough enough to handle it all.
This mom can attest to that! As a native New Yorker myself, I went to high school in Manhattan, college as well, and my daily commute to work for the past 20 years has been riddled with situations that could use a burst of freshness from Febreeze–New York City subways, anyone? I’m the mom who would rather rock back and forth than hold onto the poles on the train that millions of hands–and germs–have touched. And yes, there’s been an instance (or two) where I’ve used a Bounty paper towel to hold on the pole. I don’t care who saw me!
But I digress…
Inspired by the fact that “New Yorkers are among the most resilient and adaptable people you can find,” the best part of the show was behind the scenes. Wayans revealed that all of the talent was asked to keep their sets clean – no offensive language, references, not a hint of the raunchiness with “jokes suitable for ages five through 95.”Who’s ever heard of such a thing?! I’m sure it happens elsewhere, but Caroline’s On Broadway is known for hosting the most legendary comedians in the world, who happen to use adult language.
But do you know what happened? Each comedian pulled off the clean comedy set and still had the audience of media types and bloggers cracking up, all the while craftily weaving the Procter & Gamble products into their routines. Now that’s New York tough (#NYTough). It was a great night.
Some of the jokes:
“I ride the C train and it’s like an episode of ‘Orange is the New Black’ and there’s always someone peeing in a cup”
@MichelleButeau, comedian, VH1 Best Week Ever
“I love Head and Shoulders, I wish I could put it on my flaky ex-husband.”
@SherriEShepherd, former co-host of The View, starring in Broadway’s Cinderella
“I’m the only Black man in my building except for the doorman. He’d slow clap when I’d come in and I’m like, ‘you saw me yesterday!’.”
@CheThinks, comedian, co-anchor of SNL’s Weekend Update
