In 2004, a young Kanye West was seldom seen without a fresh Ralph Lauren polo and a Louis Vuitton backpack in tow. The then 26-year-old had finally made the gruesome transition from producer to rap star. His socially conscious debut album The College Dropout challenged the benefits of College and confronted materialism in the black community. This past February, The College Dropout celebrated it’s 20th anniversary. West used that opportunity to tweet about his first record.

“Ten years ago today, we finally released what had been my life’s work up to that point: The College Dropout,” West said via his Twitter account which counts over 10 million followers. He continued about the experience: “I say “finally” because it was a long road, a constant struggle, and a true labor of love to not only convince my peers and the public that I could be an artist, but to actually get that art out for the world to hear.”
