Nubian Skin: New Lingerie Line Caters to Black Consumers
Ever dealt with the struggle of searching high and low for nude hosiery? Panty hose, bras and/or undies that perfectly match and complement your skin tone? You’re not alone! In fact many Black women deal with this struggle. But the struggle is over if lingerie company Nubian Skin has anything to do with it.
The innovative brand recently rolled out a line of undergarments specifically for women of color, dubbing their merchandise “a different kind of nude.”
As its founder explains on the company’s website, Nubian Skin was birthed out of a lack of lingerie available, which matched her skin tone, “ My nude isn’t the nude I see in shops. Despite the reality that women of colour have the same needs as all women when it comes to lingerie and hosiery (and spend the same of their hard-earned money), the industry simply doesn’t cater to us.”
And with that came the birth of a dream the Englad-bred founder of Nubian Skin is hoping will become a go-to for Black women, “For you beautiful black and brown women, next time you need a nude pair of hold-ups or maybe a nude strapless bra to go under that stunning white halter dress, we’re only a few clicks away,” she says on the company’s site.
With a number of color options to choose from, Nubian Skin is hoping to satisfy the appetite of Black women in need of nude hosiery options. The darkest of the shades available is called ‘Berry,’ bras for this color range in size from 30B to 36E.
Nubian Skin’s website states that the innovation of their products is inspired by other Black trailblazers, such as Fashion Fair cosmetics creator, Eunice Johnson, who took a chance by creating a brand completely catering to the needs of Black women. And if the success of Fashion Fair cosmetics, a widely popular, long-standing brand available in a number of department stores, is any indication of Nubian Skin’s success, they can’t get ready for an uphill, successful journey.
With more and more fashion houses and brands recognizing the lack of diversity amongst their products and merchandise catered toward its African-American audience, many are beginning to offer a wider variety of options for Black consumers. As the Huffinton Post noted, the mega-popular high fashion label Christian Louboutin released a collection dubbed, “The Nudes,” which offered a wide range of color options, including ones for women of color.
Nubian Skin undergarments hits the e-commerce site this coming October. And sticking to their mission of pleasing their underserved consumer, the company plans to roll out a wider range of sizes in the near future.
“We know [our initial selection] doesn’t cover everyone, and we realize a plus size offering is important however, we had to start somewhere,” the company explains. They continue, “We are sincerely hoping business will go well, so that we can expand our size and product range.”
