Following the public outrage caused by the death of Mike Brown, an African American teen shot and killed by a Caucasian police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, reports surfaced of a White/Latino teen killed just two days later by a Black police officer in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has media outlets and critics 1. asking why this story hasn’t received the same coverage and 2. noticing the race bias in the attention given. Much like 18-year-old Brown, Dillon Taylor, 20 years old, was killed while reportedly unarmed after leaving a 7-Eleven store with his brother. The perceived double standard is fueling resentment and negative chatter on both television and radio shows as well as on social media. Talk-show host Rush Limbaugh blamed the discrepancy between the two cases on the “liberal world view” that portrays Whites as oppressors and Blacks as victims. Meanwhile, CNN news host Jake Tapper acknowledged the disparity, noting that the press often shuns such topics as inner-city violence and the high rates of black-on-black crime.
