Richard Pryor Biopic: Oprah Winfrey, Mike Epps and Lee Daniels Make a Dream Team?

August 27, 2014  |

As with many slated biopics, the lead role for the Richard Pryor movie was up in the air with newly single Nick Cannon rumored around. Well with time all things come to the light… or instagram. The Lee Daniels directed movie will not only star comedian Mike Epps as Richard Pryor but Oprah Winfrey is slated to play Pryor’s grandmother, Marie Carter.

This will be a different role for Winfrey, 60, as Grandma Carter was no pie-baking, rocking chair grandmother. Carter was the violent and abusive grandmother that ran a brothel, where Pryor was basically raised. TMZ reported that the Media queen is excited for this new tole as it will allow her to show off her acting chops in a new way. Pryor’s ex-wife, Jennifer Pryor, is taking the executive producer credit and told TMZ Oprah really wanted the role to show her “gritty” side.

If you remember, there was a bit of unrest circling early on regarding the film and its character choices as many were not too enthused with Cannon up for Pryor. Richard Pryor, Jr. and Rain Pryor stated they did not believe Cannon had the acting chops and would prefer Marlon Wayans take the role of their iconic comedian father.  Epps reportedly came into the audition and swept Daniels and producers off of their feet. Epps has also already become a student of Pryor’s life as he is playing the legend in the yet-to-be confirmed Nina Simone film starring Zoe Saldana.

Mike Epps, Oprah Winfrey and Lee Daniels sound like a power-packed team and emit tons of chemistry in the picture Oprah posted after the film’s ” great first read session.”

The children of Pryor however are not sitting so great. Richard Pryor, Jr. accuses ex-wife Jennifer of illegally obtaining right to his father’s information and threatened to take action if the movie continues. We’ll be waiting to see if this occurs or if some happy median is reached.

What do you think? Is the cast shaping out to make a heavy-hitting movie?
