Over 40 & Fab: Deborah Cox

July 28, 2014  |

Deborah Cox recently turned 40 this month! It seems like just yesterday the Canadian singer was belting out the hit single “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here.” Cox was recently recruited by the production team of the forthcoming Lifetime biopic about Whitney Houston’s life. She was asked to cover all of Houston’s songs since the family has banned Lifetime from using any of Houston’s original voice. Ouch!

Deborah Cox appeared on Entertainment Tonight, honored and willing to cover all the hits including “I Will Always Love You.” The biopic will be directed by Angela Bassett and it centers around Houston’s marriage to Bobby Brown:

“I really just want to tell a story about a boy and a girl who fell in love……we know that drugs were a part of their story and that’s certainly an element of their story. We can’t tell their story without that,” Angela Bassett said. “It’s involved, and I hope we can unpack it gently.”

Houston’s 21-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina is not happy about the casting for the film. America’s Next Top Model alum Yaya Dacosta has been cast to play her mother and she’s not happy about that. Bobbi says she should have been cast, but Bassett has a different outlook:

“No, I did not think about that. I did not think about casting her,” Bassett recently told Entertainment Weekly. “And probably for a number of reasons, you know. One being that she’s not an actress. I know she’s acted here and there. I know she’s been on their family’s reality show, but she’s not an actress and acting is a craft.”

“It’s an attempt to illuminate the complexities of human behavior and life. And this is a very fast-paced schedule; we have just 21 days to tell this story. It’s more than just saying lines and turning the light on. You have to drive the story — there’s a technical aspect.”
