As a mom of three, Erykah Badu knows a little bit about what goes into giving birth, both physically and spiritually. While her fans have been pining for her indefinite return to the stage, Badu — the ultimate free spirit — has been working on one of her numerous passions. She made an appearance at this year’s Essence Music Festival and after her electrifying set she shared the details of how and why she’s taken on ‘doula’ as a one of her many jobs.
“A doula is basically an assistant to a woman giving birth and her family. I’ve been a doula for about seven, eight years. I do it because it’s something I love. A doula is like a vessel, kinda has to be there for the family. Like water, a doula has to be able to fit into any container.
I also, as a doula, am at the bedside of new souls coming in and I also sit at hospices and places where people are passing away so they feel peace as well and it’s just something that I’ve always loved. I did it one time with a girlfriend who happens to be the wife of stic.man, half of this rap group dead prez. I was just there with her, not to serve any particular purpose but I just ended up being there the whole time like, ‘Wow, this is something that makes me feel really good that I can do’ and I’ve been doing it ever since.“
We can’t be mad at that at all Ms. Badu. Take a look at this slideshow featuring the Analog Girl and her three kids.
