Officer Beats A Woman On the Side of the Highway

July 6, 2014  |

It’s a disturbing viral video: A Los Angeles police officer beats a woman on the side of the highway as onlookers helplessly spectate the chilling act. The video shows a woman being pinned down to the ground as the highway patroller repeatedly punches her, delivering blow after blow to her face.

According to the Associated Press, California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. According to CHP Assistant Chief Chris O’Quinn, the officer was answering a report of a woman wandering along Interstate 10 near downtown Los Angeles. And when he found her she started walking down an off-ramp and then turned around and walked back onto the expressway.

O’Quinn says the video only shows a portion of the entire incident and claims the officer was simply trying to restrain the pedestrian, who chose to remain nameless, as she was endangering both herself and people operating motor vehicles. He was helped by a plain-clothes officer who handcuffed the woman.

But according to David Diaz, who recorded the incident, the officer “agitated the situation more than [he] helped it.”

Diaz claims the woman was, in fact, walking back off of the highway, and it wasn’t until the officer shouted something at her that she turned around.

While little is known about the pedestrian, ABC News says she is a great-grandmother and since the incident is undergoing psychiatric evaluation. Her family says they want to see the officer punished for beating their relative in such a manner. Their attorney, Caree Harper, says “We want the focus to be what he was doing to her, not what she was doing to him.” She continued, “She was getting beat like an animal. No one should ever be beat like that.”

The officer is on administrative leave as California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the situation.
