Hip-Hop Kids All Grown Up: Ice-T’s Grandson, Eminem’s Daughter

July 1, 2014  |

Hip-hop is getting old. Yes, it’s still very prevalent as a musical culture in the eyes of today’s youth, but the genre is truly starting to age. You know it’s true when hip-hop kids–the children born into hip-hop by some of its biggest stars–are making their own headlines.

Last week, Ice-T’s grandson was arrested after he accidentally shot and killed his friend. Elyjah Marrow, 19, was allegedly playing with a gun when it accidentally went off, killing another 19-year-old, Daryus Johnson. As horrible as it was to hear about such a tragedy, I followed up my initial sympathetic reaction for the kid who lost his life, with the thought, “Ice-T has a 19-year-old grandson?” Well, yes. Ice-T is now 56 and not only is he a grandfather, but it’s possible he could be a great granddad in a few years.

Not too long after I saw this news, a Facebook picture of a blond-haired white girl graduating from high school started to make its way onto my timeline. I saw the photo at least three times and, at first glance, the girl did not look familiar at all. But when I read the headline: “Eminem’s Daughter Hailie Graduates From High School,” I did a double take. High school?? Wasn’t he just rapping about his baby daughter on that “Forgot About Dre” record not too long ago? I could have sworn her voice was on another record and she was just a baby. But if you do the math, he was at the height of his career 10 years ago, and if she was around six ten years ago, well then yes, she would be graduating from high school this year. Eminem seems to have done a pretty good job of keeping his daughter out of the limelight and obviously in school, so kudos to her. But hip-hop blinked, and Hailie is now a high school grad.

Do you feel old yet? Wait, there’s more. While N.W.A. fans are ecstatic to hear about their favorite rap group finally making that biopic, I’m scratching my head trying to figure out how their kids are old enough to star in the movie. Ice Cube, 45, announced that his son O’Shea Jackson, Jr. will play him in the film, which is scheduled to begin shooting in August. Cube’s son is around the same age that Ice Cube was when he launched his career. And yes, Boyz In The Hood came out over twenty years ago.

Because some in hip-hop have put their careers before parenthood, it may seem as if these hip-hop parents are older now that their children are in their early adult years. But in actuality, becoming a grandparent in your mid-50’s is very normal. Despite the fact that Jay Z and Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy is a baby, the idea of Jay Z waiting until he was well into his forties to have his first child is actually some new ish. Many of his rap peers already had their children when they were in the 20’s and 30’s. The oldest son of Jay Z’s former partner Damon Dash is now 22-years-old. Meanwhile, Nas’s daughter Destiny is 19-years old and Diddy’s oldest son, Justin Combs, got a full football scholarship to attend UCLA. Though they may not be thinking about it yet, Dash, Nas or Diddy could become grandfathers a lot sooner than they may expect. Jay Z, however, will not likely experience that until he is well into his 60s. Hopefully, he and Bey will slow down on touring by then.
