You’re Invited to Dinner: Rev Run Hits The Kitchen on New Cooking Show
It’s been five years since we’ve seen the ins and outs of the Simmons family, but Rev Run of Run DMC and the clan are back on air! This time they aren’t sharing the entire home or the room renovations we recently viewed on DIY, instead we’ll be in Mama Justine’s kitchen. The Cooking Channel will premiere “Rev Run’s Sunday Suppers” June 8 at 10 pm.
“My hopes were to kill two birds with one stone. Number one, be back on television which I enjoy and number two try to pull people to the house to eat with us on Sunday like a normal family,” said Rev Run,49, of getting the kids to his 9,000-square-foot Saddle River, N.J. home. The family invited the New York Daily News into their home for a preview.
The loving parents told NY Daily News that they were feeling a bit of the empty nest syndrome with their four eldest children out of the house and pursuing careers. The youngest adopted daughter Miley in now six and Russy is now 17. Vanessa, 30, has given the duo their first grandchild in the midst of her blossoming acting career. Angela, 26, is managing a clothing line and Diggy, 19, is making his own impact in the music industry following in Pops footsteps. Oh and let’s not forget about JoJo,24, who has not stayed in the limelight as much as his siblings – but is also pursuing a rap and acting career.
The Simmons’ home won’t look the same as we saw it on “Run’s House” as it has undergone major renovations which were aired on DIY Network’s “Rev Run’s Renovation,” in January. Take the kitchen, the majestic white room where all the magic happens, is updated with marble countertops, a red backsplash, all red cooking ware and splashes of zebra print.
But the decor isn’t the only thing going in the kitchen. This musically-inclined family always has a soundtrack for their cooking time. Rev Run’s choice is Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, Justine will enjoy the classic Frank Sinatra and when Diggy comes by to cook with his trainer he’s also playing classics – those of his father, throwback Run DMC.
It’s Justine’s kitchen, so mom makes most of the meals in the home – like her famed lasagna! But she also shares the heat with the rest of the family.
Angela joins to make her veggie tacos, a healthy version of chicken and waffles and turkey wings. While Rev Run tries to get out of eating his vegetables while on the grill.
“I’m out in the back hiding in the snow making steak while she was in there making veggie crumbles,” says Run.
It’s not easy to get the whole family together at once, but when it does happen it looks to be a good time!
“There’s no method to our madness,” Rev Run said. “The prayer is the only quiet moment at the table.”
Will you be tuning in?
