Today Josephine Baker would have turned 108. The revered entertainer rose to fame in the 1920’s (which clearly wasn’t easy for an African American woman at the time.) The world famous icon became a citizen of France in 1937 and became the first African American woman to star in a major motion picture. The superstar was liberated in Paris where she performed for various audiences who instantly fell in love with her showmanship and exotic dancing. Ernest Hemingway once said that Baker was “the most sensational woman anybody ever saw. Or ever will.”
