Somaya Reece Wants You To Make A Commitment To Living Healthy Now

October 21, 2014  |

First, I am going to give it to you straight, no chaser. If you want the real deal on fitness and health, I am your girl. Being someone who has battled their weight their entire life in combination with extreme eating disorders, I can attest to trying everything in the book to “get skinny” quick, I did it the unhealthy way. Well, I no longer think that way. So let me begin by saying, I want to congratulate you on beginning your journey the healthy way! We all know what a struggle this whole “healthy” lifestyle is–not knowing how to begin, where to begin. What does it even mean? In the beginning it’s all so confusing, so I get it. I am with you on this journey. I have been there more than I can count on both my hands and feet. The weight loss and getting healthy battle is real!

Making a commitment to living healthy is the best gift you can ever give yourself. It’s funny how we worry about everything else but our health. We worry about our nails getting done, our roots need a touch up, we worry about getting a new outfit for a dinner date, we worry about everything but getting healthy. Why is that? It begins both with your mind (mind over matter) and what we learn along the way. If you aren’t used to living a healthy lifestyle, or don’t suffer from many health issues, committing to be healthy may not be on your list of priorities, but it should be. Don’t wait until it’s too late!

Let’s get started. Here are my top five tips on how to commit to your health!

  • Get married! Yes. Get married, just as you would commit to a marriage you must think of this journey in the same way. Commit to your health. When you get married you make a serious commitment and you vow to honor it. So honor yourself and COMMIT! How I began to make my first commitment was by telling myself that I was going to give it a shot. You commit to going to the club with your girls right? So why can’t you commit to something that will be forever? You and that club will be parting ways at some point in life, but your health will outlast that Friday night hot spot.

  • Thirty is FABULOUS! It took me about 30 days of commitment before I actually stuck to it. During the first few weeks alone, prior to the 30 days, I went through hell. I had extreme ups and downs of countless of failures AKA trial and error. After that small hump I finally figured it out. It really does take 30 days of constantly practicing something to turn it into a habit. If you stick to 30 days of anything it becomes a part of you, a habit you can’t live without. Thirty days to fabulous as I always say!

  • Keep it REAL! Please don’t do what many do when they begin their commitment to health. They set up all these insanely unrealistic goals that no one on earth can achieve. You’re over here talking about “I’m going to lose 50 pounds in 2 weeks!” No sweetie. NO! Don’t be crazy honey you are lying to yourself. Nobody, not even you believe that! Be realistic about your commitment, be real about your goals, be REAL point blank period.

  • Tell everyone! By everyone, I mean those around you on a regular basis. It is important that your loved ones, friends, co workers know your level of commitment and that you ask them to respect that. Tell them what they can do to help you stick to your commitment. Until you learn willpower this is a very helpful tip. Let me explain what I mean. My man is the type that can eat anything at any time and never gain a pound! So sometimes he eats things that are not in my health agenda. He is very polite individual or maybe it’s a Latin household thing that and he will offer anyone in the room some of his food. So he has a habit of always asking me if I want a bite of what he’s eating. DUH! Yeah babe, heck yeah I want a bit of that delicious pizza, chips, and cheesecake with strawberry topping you are eating. But I know damn well I shouldn’t have any. So I asked him along with my other family members to not offer me their food. This helps me stay on track and they respect my commitment to health.

  • Never give up! This will carry you through life not just in committing to your health. Why would you start just to give up? When you commit, you wrote a contract to yourself. Don’t break it no matter how tough it gets. Will it get easier? Want me to lie to you or give you the real? It gets more comfortable. Nothing ever gets 100% easier because there are many obstacles along the way. But  what can be easy is to NOT GIVE UP! once you have made your mind up to commit trust me when I say this, giving up will never be an option.

Just a note to end on: Before I officially committed to my health I made every excuse in the book, I’ll start next Monday! That was my famous one. I would’ve never realized that three and a half years down the road I would be where I am today. I am a size 8/9, a medium, in clothes, I’m down a little over 65 pounds, but most of all I actually feel healthy. I don’t huff and puff anymore.  I sleep better at night, I no longer feel dehydrated, I don’t have fainting or dizzy spells. These were all plaguing me prior to me committing to my health. Now that I am committed I feel incredibly healthy. Now let’s not lie to each other here. It also feels damn good being a size 8 the healthy way. If I did it, you can do it too. All you have to do is commit!

Con Amor,
