Nia Long on Motherhood: “Working Was Like a Mini Vacation”

- By

Nia Long is one of our favorite women in Hollywood. She seems to have it all. At 43, she’s had a long, successful career, has a strong relationship with NBA assistant coach Ime Udoka and two beautiful sons. And, of course, we want to know how she makes it all work. Her answer? “I’m so not balanced,” the star of The Best Man Holiday recently told HelloBeautiful.

Find out how being a mom and an actress is like being two different people:

“I just do what is necessary in the moment. If it’s the kids the need attention. I take care of that…My brain is like split in half. Half is for myself and half is for the kids.”

“And I think that is a mother’s journey to make sure that they come first but to never loose yourself in the process. So when I go from being mom in my Uggs and my jeans and my t-shirt, and I have to come walk in these heels, I’m like, ‘Can somebody carry me because I forgot how to walking heels?’ And I think every mom feels that way.”

“It is two totally different selves that have to operate in that world…For me coming and out doing this film I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I get to play with my friends! I don’t have to be at home with the kids all day.’ It was like a little mini vacation even though it was work.”

We completely understand. Even the best, most dedicated mothers need a break from the kids and a chance to remember how much they love their work. Do you feel like Ms. Long is right about having to split yourself in half?
