Will You Keep Your Maiden Name?

June 6, 2011  |

Now more than ever before women are deciding to keep their maiden names.  While the option has always been there, women who’ve established themselves professionally are thinking twice before abandoning this part of themselves.

But this idea is not new. Back in the 19th century, Lucy Stone, a women’s right pioneer said, “”A wife should no more take her husband’s name than he should hers. My name is my identity and must not be lost.”

Whether they’re hyphenating their maiden and married names, making their maiden name their middle name or creating an entirely new name. It’s an option that is growing…slowly. Less than 15 percent of women are choosing these options; but writer Mildred Antenor, theGrio.com says old habits die hard and these numbers are something to take note of.

What do you think about keeping you maiden name? Should men ever give up their last names?
