This tragedy in a Brooklyn, New York has us sick to our stomachs. Mingdong Chen, 25, is facing five counts of murder after reportedly stabbing his cousin’s wife and her four children. Three of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene from stab wounds to the neck and torso. Some neighbors told the New York Post they were so horrified by what happened they planned to move, and who can blame them?
The Chief of Police told the Associated Press officers opened the door of the family’s apartment to find Chen covered in blood. Initially, Chen resisted arrest and assaulted an officer while being processed, but eventually he said he committed the murders.
Chen had been staying on the first floor of the family’s two-family home for about a week. Neighbors and family members told police that after emigrating from China ten years ago, Chen still spoke only a little English. He struggled to hold on to jobs at restaurants and had been heard saying that everyone in America was doing better than he was. When he confessed, he said it was because he envied his cousin’s income and lifestyle. That’s jealousy on a whole other terrifying level.
Reports say that when Chen’s cousin, who was away at work came home and say all the police cars and ambulances in front of his home he was “hysterical”. Can you imagine coming home to find your whole family murdered by someone you trusted and trying to help? This is so unbelievably sad.
