Woman Who Had Son at Age 13 Gets Her PhD the Same Day He Does
If this story isn’t inspirational, we don’t know what is. Georgia’s Vickie McBride had her son Maurice when she was just 13 years old. Not only did this teen mom raise a brilliant son, she focused on her own education and now she and her son are both Dr. McBride.
Dropping out of school was “never an option,” McBride told her local CBS station. Her mother, a retired teacher, helped raise Maurice as Vickie continued school. But Maurice, now 37, faced his own issues, dropping out of high school at 16 and finding himself in a juvenile detention facility. He says reading the Bible during his time there helped him realize just where he’d gone wrong. He pursued a music career but also continued his education, earning a master’s and becoming an instructor at Paine College.
Maurice then called his mother said he wanted to get his PhD. Would she be interested in doing it as well? Vickie thought she was done with school, but after some consideration, she decided to enter Capella University with her son. Now, Vickie holds a PhD in K-12 education and Maurice has his doctorate in organizational management. Their commencement ceremony was a proud, moving moment for them both. “I never thought I would get chance to see my mother walk across the stage and then she turned around and saw me walk across the stage,” said Maurice.
Vickie added that she landed herself in a very, very hard position but she wasn’t going to let it stop her. “I didn’t let my situation define who I was. I defined my situation. I looked at my situation and I told situation this is where we are going and this is what we are doing.”
