Mother Puts Her Crying Baby in an Ice Chest
A scary story out of Louisiana has us feeling sick to our stomachs. Sunday, Jami Jo Ranson was seen putting her baby in an ice chest, says the Huffington Post. She was charged with child desertion and later drug possession after a search.
Bystanders saw her put the infant in the container, which also held a gas can, and just sit around while her child screamed. A neighbor rescued the child and called Baton Rouge police. It’s unclear whether the ice chest actually had ice in it or not at the time. Police placed the baby in protective custody and Ranson was booked on child desertion charges. Once at the police station, Ranson was found to have illegal prescription drugs. She was charged with drug position and held on $10,000 bond.
It’s horrible this happened and it’s a good thing the baby is safe, but mom is in a bad, bad place. Her actions–both endangering her child and abusing prescription drugs–seem to be the symptoms rather than the cause. Ranson’s case is a pretty convincing argument that mothers need more screening for postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis.
