Update: Children’s Place Pulls Its Sexist T-Shirts

August 6, 2013  |

It seems like every five minutes a company puts out a silly t-shirt that encourages girls to be materialistic or sexy. Here’s the latest offender from the Children’s Place, which lists a girl’s best subjects. The subjects she’s definitely not good at? Math. But it’s okay, because nobody’s perfect. ***Side eye.

This photo, originally snapped for Jezebel, shows the offending t-shirt, which doesn’t seem to be available on the Children’s Place website any more. It’s really problematic that a t-shirt for girls is all covered in sparkles and making fun of the fact that a girl isn’t smart. Because the first “subject” she’s good at is shopping. With women still not making the same as men and being underrepresented in the tech fields, the Children’s Place should be making t-shirts that encourage girls to follow their dreams. The shirt can still be adorable and glittery.

Is this t-shirt offensive to you? Would you buy it for your little girl?

Updated August 6, 3:38: After the backlash from parents and blogs, the Children’s Place pulled the t-shirt that listed the wearer’s best subjects as shopping, music and dancing and math as the worst. Parents were also upset about a pink confection reading “born to wear diamonds.” In response to the angry comments on its Facebook, the company responded,

We take feedback from our customers very seriously. It has come to our attention that some of you view our Best Subjects T shirt as insensitive towards girls and women. This was not our intent. There are countless women in all walks of life who excel in math, including our very own CEO. We have pulled this product from our stores and we want to express our apologies to anyone we may have offended

If that’s the way they really feel, then why even make the shirt in the first place? Good job, parents, for affecting change so fast and raising daughters that know they can like math andshopping.
