Are Rappers the New Domestic Idols?

July 12, 2013  |

When we think of rappers, we think of drugs, flashy cars and the kind of womanizing to make Don “Magic” Juan blush. An interesting essay from theGrio says the tide is changing, however, with some of the biggest artists in hip-hop becoming family men. But is it enough to make up for years and years of negative images?

In his latest album “Magna Carta Holy Grail”, Jay-Z reveled in love of his wife and fatherhood. Tatted up rapper Wiz Khalifa, as famous for his weed habit as he is for his music, can’t stop tweeting about spending time with girlfriend Amber Rose and their son Sebastian. Nas has even devoted a song on his own new album to “growing up” and being a good father. So after years of lyrics we’re stilll not sure we want our kids to hear, some important figures are definitely making big shifts. They love their wives and their children.

But while theGrio says there’s a sea change going on, the fact is, these same rappers can easily slip into the same patterns we’ve come to expect. Their beautiful families haven’t change them completely, nor can they completely change hip-hop. For every Jay-Z, there are a dozen Rick Rosses.

Do you think these family man rappers are setting a better example for your kids?
