Preschools and kindergartens have been flooded with little Sophias, Jacobs, and Isabellas for years now. But the baby name trend is shifting directions for 2013. TODAY reports that Katniss for girls and Django for boys, thanks to the insane popularity of the “Hunger Games” and “Django: Unchained”.
Baby name website Nameberry told TODAY about rising trends. Though Sophia is still wildly popular for girls, it’s Katniss, the name of the fictional heroine, that’s gaining the most popularity in 2013. Django, the Romani name meaning “I awake”, came back into the public consciousness after Jamie Foxx played the character in the controversial slave revenge drama last December. It’s also quickly climbing in popularity with new parents.
Names influenced by the movies aren’t the only ones that will be big for parents this year. Baby names chosen by celebrities (the nice ones, not the crazy ones) are getting more and more attention. For instance, more parents are choosing Harper for girls, the name David and Victoria Beckham picked for their daughter. Also rising in popularity is Messiah and the Biblical name Asher for boys plus Imogen for girls.
