As Jaden makes the rounds with his dad to promote their upcoming movie After Earth, it was reported that the 14-year-old designer, rapper and actor was going to become an emancipated minor. But after appearing on Wednesday’s Ellen, that rumor has been put to rest, says The Grio.
The rumor started when the British tabloid the Sun said Will Smith said Jaden asked for “freedom” for his fifteenth birthday this July. However, Jaden set the record straight on Ellen, explaining. “Here’s the thing I need to explain: I’m not going anywhere, the thing that people don’t get is that everything at [Will Smith’s] house is free. So I can get anything and everything I want at his house. So I think I’m going to be there for 20 [to] 30 more years.” Father and son apparently have a bet going about when Jaden can leave the nest. The younger Smith said “as soon as I have a movie that’s bigger than one of [his father’s] movies then I have to get my own house.”
Will Smith says he understands teens wanting to have more freedom since it’s something all kids feel at one time or other. He understands his son trying to define himself apart from his superstar father and his important career. So while Jaden might make enough money to become an emancipated minor (emancipated minors must file court papers saying they can support themselves financially and more) he’s better off at home with Will and Jada.
