Mother Claims Son Has Cancer, Scams Friends Out of Thousands
It’s heartwarming to hear of communities coming together to support someone who’s sick. But when someone like Susan Stillwagon takes advantage, it’s just plain sad. New Jersey police said the mother told friends and family that her 9-year-old son was battling cancer in order to scam them, taking up to than $3,500.
Stillwagon, 35, did more than tell her neighbors about the boy’s alleged sickness; she convinced him he had lymphoma as well. The police department received a tip that something was fishy about the story. Investigators dug into the boy’s medical records and found out she’d been making up the entire thing.
Before being found out, the mother of four held bake sales and sold bracelets to raise money for her son’s treatment. She is being treated at a local hospital after suffering an apparent breakdown after the allegations. Stillwagon is being charged with theft by deception and using her son to commit a crime.
