TV Won’t Ruin Your Kids
Fretful parents can rest easy. Watching TV, even lots of it, won’t harm your child’s development. According to BBC, the United Kingdom’s Medical Research Council studied 11,000 elementary school students and concluded it was wrong to connect bad behavior with screen time.
The behavioral problems they identified in children had more to do with more important environmental factors like parenting styles. These findings contradict studies done in the United States that note excessive television time can lead to attention and behavioral in children starting at age 7. In the UK study, children who watched more than three hours of TV each day were only slightly more likely to have attention problems or bully classmates after age 7.
Still, researchers urge parents to limit the amount of TV their kids watch all day. Not because it causes problems but because it takes time away from other important kid activities like doing homework and playing outside.
