Traveling With Kids: White Elephant Hotels and Residences

April 2, 2013  |

Parents are constantly searching for ways to ensure they are imparting the best morals and values into their child’s development. There are some experiences children cannot learn from classroom work or books. Life experiences are often times the best and most cohesive. Imagine traveling to South Africa or Spain and introducing your children to cultural experiences through cuisine, community awareness and foreign languages. During a fun day at the beach your child will have the opportunity to meet children from around the world while breaking down any barriers to achieve the common denominator which is to have lots of fun! Even traveling to different states within the U.S. will give your children the opportunity to experience life differently from their everyday experiences and accustoms.

I recommend traveling with your children as soon as you are able to. Engage them in the process of obtaining a passport by creating a fun exercise on the importance of having one. I commend Tracey Friley, executive director of OBG (One Brown Girl Adventures – for creating The Passport Party which travels the nation to gift underserved girls with their first passport. We definitely need more collective efforts geared toward this endeavor. There are also amazing books such as “My Pop-up Atlas”, “Student Atlas of the World” and “Me on the Map”, all be found at Barnes & Noble or shopping online. As you start the process of booking your vacation, create a family chart that will allow everyone to participate and plan your adventure together. On the day of travel, print maps of the airport and make what could be the most stressful part of your travel into a day of learning and fun. Reading the arrivals and departures screen could definitely buy a few hours for sure.

Remember, traveling with our children is not only a celebratory time for everyone to catch their breath and relax, but a time for growth, awareness and learning! While planning your summer vacation this year, consider visiting the Nantucket Island and White Elephant Hotel Residences. Nantucket Island has received many accolades from National Geographic, Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler listed it as one of the Top 10 best islands in the U.S.
