Before you reach for that second cookie, slice of cake, or brownie, you may want to read this new study from Cornell University. It turns out, even a little bit is enough to do the trick.

Researchers gave their subjects chocolate chips, potato chips and apple pie. The first group received larger-than-recommended portions of the treats, equaling 1370 calories and the second group had 195 calories worth of snacks. Each subject had to rate the their hunger and craving before eating and again fifteen minutes after eating. They had as much time to eat their snacks as they needed.

Not surprisingly, that the people in the big snacks group ate 77 percent more than their counterparts in the second group. What was surprising is the group who had smaller portions reported feeling just as satisfied as those who had almost twice as much to eat. Researchers say this study shows the importance of portion control and that even small treats can satisfy big cravings.

So the next time you and hubby are out at dinner and you ask for just a spoonful, savor that one spoonful and see if it doesn’t do enough for your sweet tooth.
