“It Was A Poor Decision” Celebrity Breakup Announcements That Left Us With Questions
Celebrity breakup announcements make it sound like everything is OK — until you hear the story behind them.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
Tom and Katie’s divorce announcement made it sound like their split, though sad, was a simple one:
“We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri’s best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents.”
In reality? Katie Holmes had to flee the marriage with daughter Suri using disposable cellphones and out-of-state lawyers after having enough of Cruise’s beloved Church of Scientology.
Chanel Iman and A$AP Rocky
Chanel and A$AP kept their relationship and engagement so quiet, we were excited to hear that A$AP finally planned to talk about the split — until we heard what he had to say…
“I got really depressed because I knew that–she deserves better than me… [Chanel’s] my best friend, man. For real. Because you have to be mature to be in this kind of predicament and have a relationship. I never really talk about these kinda things, her and I, like that. And she never really talks about me, so I’m not really gonna say much on the subject but, she’s happy, and that’s all I want. I want her to be happy.”
Did he cheat? Was he traveling too much? Is he just a bad partner? There were rumors that a fling with Rita Ora may have ended things, but we still don’t know for sure. Rocky, we can’t have a few more deets?
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
Ben and Jennifer shocked everyone when they sprung this divorce announcement on us recently:
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time.”
Cheating rumors have since surfaced, but nothing concrete. We all get that they want privacy, but announcing the divorce and then refusing to tell us anything about it? Frustrating.
Heidi Klum and Seal
Their official announcement?
“While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate. We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart.”
Not the whole truth, but it sounds better than Seal’s version, which included putting the family bodyguard on blast:
“I didn’t expect any better from [the bodyguard]…but I would’ve thought Heidi would [have] shown a bit more class…before deciding to fornicate with the help, as it were.”
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
At least Brad and Jennifer’s split announcement addressed the rumors:
“We would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media. This decision is a result of much thoughtful consideration. We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for one another.”
But while I can appreciate Pitt trying to cover his tracks to protect Aniston, absolutely everyone knew he was leaving for Angelina Jolie. Maybe a straight-up “I’m sorry” would have been better.
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
I was very surprised not to hear more about this split from talkative Nick Cannon. And when he finally did pipe up on The Insider, he had very little to say:
“There is trouble in paradise. We have been living in separate houses for a few months.”
But when insiders revealed that Carey had a gag order placed on Cannon, things started to make a little more sense. Especially if the rumors of his infidelity (and the bodyguards Mariah sent to keep him faithful) are true.
Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo
What did Jason have to say about their split?
“Every relationship has ups and downs. There was a lot of pressures of marriage.”
This one I really didn’t get. Every man knows that any woman who wears a purity ring is serious about marriage. He even wrote a song for her called “Marry Me” and Sparks starred in the video. Now there’s too much pressure to marry?
Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa
Amber’s Tweeted breakup announcement sounded like we were getting all of the details:
“Please stop with the fake stories, I would never ever ever cheat on my husband in a million years I think u guys know this… Unfortunately my now ex husband can’t say the same…”
That is until we got all the dirty details about the twins, Wiz’s salty behavior, and Rose’s failed attempts to put her family back together.
Future and Ciara
Future’s first official word on he and Ciara’s rumored split? This Instagram post with the caption, “I Dnt respond to rumors I respond to money #MONSTER.”
I feel like if there were rumors about me cheating with my personal assistant while my fiancée was pregnant with my baby, I’d have more to say.
Sherri Shepherd and Lamar Sally
In a rare case, Sherri Shepherd kept completely quiet about her split from Lamar Sally. Not even her co-workers knew. A source shared, “She is such a pro. She came to work all week, and nobody knew that anything was going on. Nobody knew that she was even expecting with the surrogate.”
That is until Lamar Sally started spilling a ton of tea and Shepherd Sherri went on Queen Latifah to tell her side of the story: Lamar was damn near pushing her to a nervous breakdown, so she had to let go for the sake of her son, Jeffrey.
Robin Thicke and Paula Patton
What did these two high school sweethearts say about the end of a relationship that spanned 20 years?
“We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time.”
The whole “mutual” split would have been believable if it weren’t for Thicke’s take-me-back album, Paula, and an array of cheating allegations against the singer. But with his better half remaining quiet to respect the privacy of her son, we may never get the other side of this story.
Draya Michele and Orlando Scandrick
This one was full of ups and downs. First Scandrick said,
“I have made the decision to call off the engagement and permanently end the relationship I had with Draya. In hindsight, it was a poor decision to propose. I am anxious to move on with my life both personally and professionally.”
Then he apologized,
“I want to apologize for my original statement. I let my emotions fly impulsively. Draya is a great mother, works hard and I wish her nothing but the best. I still love her.”
Then he told Draya “f**k you” a few hours later! Talk about an emotional roller coaster…
Kat Von D and Deadmau5
When Kat Von D ended her post-Jesse James engagement with Deadmau5, she had this to say:
“Man, I’m a fool. Cheating on your loved one is the most hurtful thing one could do. I hate to have to admit, that this relationship is indeed over.”
The revelation was so much of a shock, fans thought it was a throwback tweet from her relationship with Jesse James. But the reality was a little sadder: The famous tattoo artist had indeed dated two famous cheaters in a row. Talk about bad luck.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
Gwyneth Paltrow announced the end of her marriage to Chris Martin on her blog:
“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.”
But while the announcement made sense, Paltrow’s post title, “Conscious Uncoupling,” had the entire Internet wondering what the hell was really going on.
