Being Black in America will have you going through some changes. Just when you get bogged down by racism, oppression, discrimination and injustice, there comes a glimmer of hope that things might get better. And though we’re certainly not there yet, today’s removal of the Confederate Flag from the South Carolina Statehouse was a step in the right direction.
After South Carolina governor Nikki Haley signed a bill, with 9 different pens, in honor of the Emanuel AME Church shooting victims, the flag, a symbol of hate for so many, was lowered and removed from the premises by two honor guards. It will be taken to a Confederate Relic Room.
Crowds cheered as the flag descended, chanting “Take It Down! Take It Down!”
The ceremony was only 10 minutes but left a lasting impression on those in South Carolina and others across the nation who felt, after 50 years, this decision was long overdue.
Here’s what President Obama had to say about the moment.
If you missed the actual removal–or just want to see it again, you can re-watch it in the videos below.
