When Bessie Smith became one of the most popular blues singers, she, along with other talented individuals including Ma Rainey, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and Jelly Roll Morton helped to usher in the jazz age. Other significant moves made in the realm of black entertainment include the formation of the Negro Leagues and the Harlem Renaissance. That cultural movement introduced some of our greatest literary talents (including Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Zora Neale Hurston) and a wealth of other talented artists, musicians, and intellectuals.
