As the biopic on Bessie Smith’s life debuts this weekend, we’re setting our X1 DVRs™ from XFINITY® to make sure we don’t miss it! But the film has also made us take a look back at the impact Smith had on music and culture in the 1920s. She was the biggest blues singer of her time and changed the way people viewed music during that era. Keeping her legacy in mind, we decided to show how other popular things and people in African-American culture shaped entertainment since the 1920s. These are just a few of many, so be sure to share some other big names and moments in the comments section. Also be sure to check out Bessie on May 16 on HBO!
