Stress. Anxiety. Depressing thoughts. Ain’t nobody got time for that! Why does it feel like negative thoughts and self-doubt always seem to win over optimism?
Anxiety affects the strongest person and contrary to belief, is not a sign of weakness. Everyone faces it at some point or another. Whether hit with a tough life decision or the feeling you’re heading down the wrong career path, it’s only natural to second guess what you’re doing.
Are you currently dealing with a situation on the job or in life that’s causing you stress? Here are some tips on how to be less anxious.
Identify your anxiety. What’s causing your mind to wander all day, or those sleepless nights? It’s important to identify the cause of your anxiety so you can find ways to get rid of it. Not sure what exactly is bothering you? Pay attention to things that elevate your levels of stress throughout the day.
Tame your fear. A major cause of anxiety is fear. In fact, there’s a good number of us who get anxious about things that may not even occur. No matter what you’re going through you need to realize fear is “false evidence appearing real.” Sure there’s a chance things can go bad, but what if it doesn’t?
Accept you can’t control everything. The sooner you realize you can’t control everything in your life, the easier it will be to live. Even the biggest perfectionist with the best intentions can’t predict every outcome, or change it for that matter. Let go of the need to be in control. It’s fine if you want to plan to prevent as much going wrong as possible, but you need to accept there will be hurdles along the way.
Realize it’s not the end of the world. Did something not go as planned? Do you still have air in your lungs? That should tell you it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of circumstances in life that will test your faith and shake your foundation. Don’t give up. As long as you’re afforded another day on this earth you have a chance to achieve the things you want.
Let go of the past. Aside from forgiving an individual and moving on from a bad situation, you really must let go of the past. There’s no point in worrying about the future or your present circumstances because of what happened yesterday.
Take each day at a time. What’s the point of being anxious about tomorrow? You have no idea what it will bring. Focus on what you’re able to accomplish today instead of feeling overwhelmed by future burdens. Small steps can add up to bring victories if you let them.
Home in on a source of happiness. There has to be something in your life that brings you joy. Find it and keep it close to your heart. The more positive you surround yourself with, the less anxious you should feel.
Face what makes you scared. Stop running away from things that make you feel anxious. Doing so only gives the person or situation power. Instead, find ways to tackle what makes you scared.
